It started in a patent medicine dealers shop near the Police Barracks in Garki Village around 1978. By 1980 the mass venue moved to a batcher in Area 1 garage in a canteen called Dumez. The mass venue was used by both Catholics and Anglicans. While Catholics had their masses in the morning, the Anglicans had theirs in the evening.
Fr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, now bishop of Sokoto diocese, was the first Parish Priest in 1983. The parish has gone through various phases of development. The name was changed from All Saints Catholic Church to Our Lady Queen of Nigeria under the pastoral guidance of the late Dominic Cardinal Ekandem.
After the death of his Eminence, Dominic Cardinal Ekandem on the 24th November, 1995, His Grace Most Rev. (Dr.) John Onaiyekan was appointed the Archbishop of Abuja Archdiocese. During his tenure, the parish witnessed tremendous expansion. The Pope during his visit to Nigeria in 1988 visited the pro-Cathedral. The church has continued to witness various development in the faith formation of the people of Nigeria.
