St Mary's Cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Help of Christians. The first section of the Cathedral was blessed and opened by Archbishop Vaughan in 1882, and the extended nave was completed and opened in 1928 by Archbishop Kelly during the Eucharistic Congress that year. The spires were added in 2000 by Cardinal Clancy. Conservation and restoration work is going on as with all cathedrals. It ranks as a minor basilica. In the chapel of the Sacred Heart there is a beautiful stature of Our Lady Help of Christians which is the focus of many visitors.
