The Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola was established as a parish church in the Archdiocese of Miami in 1970. In 1982, the Vatican announced the formation of the Diocese of Palm Beach and St. Ignatius church was chosen to serve as the cathedral of the new five-county diocese. It was dedicated as a cathedral and Bishop Thomas V. Daily of Boston was installed as the first Bishop of the Diocese of Palm Beach in October, 1984.

The architecture of the cathedral is open, with pews arranged on a sloped floor to promote better participation. The walls of cut coral stone reflect a genuine “South Florida” feel.
The Very Reverend Thomas Barrett, the current Rector, was appointed to this position by Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito on July 1, 2005. Father Barrett, with the full support of the bishop and the community, embarked on renovation of the interior of the cathedral. The changes to the worship space were enthusiastically received by parishioners and visitors alike. The Risen Christ statue, which was an important part of the cathedral’s history, is now an outdoor shrine and welcoming sign to all.

This year, those who enter through the Cathedral's Holy Doors for prayer and worship will receive a plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions. The Cathedral priests, staff and parishioners look forward to welcoming pilgrims from across the diocese and beyond during this Jubilee Year of Mercy
