The existing church was built in 1930. It was dedicated as a cathedral on August 12, 1948 when Father Maurice Beaudoux was elected bishop of the newly formed Diocese of St. Paul. The name of the town and the name of the diocese are both St. Paul. The primary patron saint is St. Paul and the secondary patron saint is St. Kateri Tekakwitha.
