Sacred Heart Cathedral

Diocese of Townsville

Townsville

The Sacred Heart Cathedral is situated in Stanley Street on Stanton Hill. It is a prominent feature of the City of Townsville.
The workmanship in the Cathedral is first class and is a tribute to our pioneering forefathers. It is a towering, impressive structure in the Revival Federation Gothic style.
The foundation stone was laid on 7 October 1900 and the building was officially opened on 16 November 1902.
A refurbishment project on the Cathedral commenced in 2002 and it was reopened in 2006. The best aspects of the original building have been retained and a modern sanctuary more suitable for contemporary liturgy, together with new artworks, have been included.
