In 1880, St. George Mission was founded in Prince Albert by Father Alexis Andre, O.M.I. The first Midnight Mass in the mission was celebrated in 1882.
In 1890, the Apostolic Vicariate of Saskatchewan was established in Prince Albert. On April 19, 1891, Rev. Albert Pascal, O.M.I. was appointed the first Bishop. Bishop Pascal consecrated the Vicariate to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Christmas 1892, the first Cathedral was inaugurated. Numerous gifts came from overseas to the new Cathedral, including: a statue of St. Anne, a magnificent multicolored crystal chandelier, and two statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, one of plaster and one of bronze. Today, the bronze statue of the Sacred Heart can be seen above the main doors.
The three bells of the Cathedral were blessed in 1894. The names inscribed on the bells are: Albertina Loudovica (Louise), Maria Anna Josephina and Germana Celestina.
In 1914, a new Cathedral was built in a Romanesque style reflective of the Cathedral of Vivier, France – the birthplace of Bishop Pascal. The total cost of the cathedral was $108,000. On November 8, 1914, Bishop Pascal blessed the new cathedral.
The Cathedral has undergone four major renovations, the latest in 2013 in preparation for the centennial celebration of 2014. These renovations included restoring the stained glass windows, upgrading the heating and sound system, painting and recarpeting of the interior.
