In 1946 the seat of the diocese was transferred to Corner Brook. The Cathedral was opened and blessed in 1956. The first church in the diocese, which served as pro-cathedral for a time, was called the Immaculate Conception and to honour that, the official name is the Cathedral of the Most Holy Redeemer and of the Immaculate Conception.
