St Wilfrid's was built in 1864 as the Cathedral for the Diocese of Beverley which covered the whole of the historic County of Yorkshire. When growing numbers of Catholics brought about the division of the diocese St Wilfrid's became a Parish Church.
The Church contains a fine Lady Chapel where until recent times there was an ancient Flemish statue of Our Lady of Mercy honoured under the title of Our Lady of York. We hope the Year of Mercy will help to revive that ancient devotion.
The parish also includes the Shrine of St Margaret Clitherow, one of the best known martyrs of the English Reformation. That shrine has also been designated as a place of special pilgrimage for the Year of Mercy.
