The town of Carrollton, Kentucky, was founded in 1838 by Charles Carroll, a devout Catholic. Charles’ cousin was the first bishop/archbishop of the United States: Baltimore's Archbishop John Carroll. The first Mass was celebrated on July 31, 1853, by Bishop Spalding, together with thirty-three families. Services were conducted in English and German. The parish is, therefore, 162 years old. There have been two churches built on the site. The current church was built in 1902. There are currently 350 families registered at St John the Evangelist.
