The history of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Jesus the Merciful in Vitebsk has begun in 2000 when there was built a small chapel on Soldiers-Internationalists street, 28. In the 2004 the foundation stone was laid by the Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Martin Vidovic.
The dedication of the church took place in October 2009 by Vitebsk Bishop Vladislav Blin. On June 18, 2011 the solemn ceremony of awarding the status of the catedral took place. The celebrations began with Corpus Christi procession through the streets of Vitebsk.
On the territory of the church there is a monument to St. John Paul II, dated to the 30th anniversary of his election as Pope.
