Welcome to the Cathedral--mother church of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond; treasured historic landmark; and center for worship and outreach.
Recorded on the National and State Registries of Historic Landmarks, the Cathedral was made possible by a single gift of $500,000 from Thomas Fortune Ryan, a Virginia-born New York businessman, and his wife Ida Barry Ryan. Its cornerstone was laid on June 4, 1903 and it was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day, 1906.
It took only three years to build the Cathedral, but generations of people have been united over a century in worship, in caring for its edifice, in building a vital parish community, and in serving the Richmond region, the Catholic Diocese, and Virginia.
