The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Baptist was built in 1823.

Daily Masses and Pastoral Services were held here until 1956 when the island suffered from a big earthquake. The roof collapsed and the church required a huge amount of work, reconstruction and renovation which continued until 1970. Meanwhile, the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin served as the Cathedral.

The architecture of the Cathedral is in the Baroque Style. The colors and its size make it stand out from afar and the wonderfully ornate clock tower stands proudly overlooking the town.

The majority of the inhabitants of Santorini belong to the Orthodox Church and the Greek Catholic families are few in number. Most of the Catholics who live here are mainly from Albania and Poland, while some are from other parts of the world.
